Many years ago, there were four Clans.
Clans of Thunder, Shadow, River, and Wind.
These four Clans once made a great journey, through
mountains and snow, to reach the lake
that was to be their new home. But after
many seasons, that home was taken from them just as
the first had been. They must journey again.
Many cats stayed behind. Among these were the Windwalker,
a shadow of the river, and Minnowstream.
Icefire—the only warrior from a group of four
littermates—lead a small group of cats on their new journey
They traveled over land and sea, with only the
word of an old queen and her son to guide them.
Many perished along the journey, or were lost in the
vast expanse of water, but finally, after many
long, hare seasons, they came across an island.
To the North were cold seas, and a desert of ice.
To the South, the remains of a broken Clan, left many
seasons before by their leader's mate and her son.
To the east lay vast deserts of sand, and
to the West awaited deep, wild forests of strange creatures.
Because the and was so distant, the Clans
agreed to meet every four seasons, rather
than every moon cycle. It was decided
that they would return to the island in leaf-bare.
Though she was from ThunderClan, Icefire
led ShadowClan to the North.
Wind Clan traveled East toward the deserts,
ThunderClan headed West to the rainforest,
and Sharkfin led RiverClan to the South
and re-joined OceanClan—the clan he was born into.
As agreed, the Clans explored their territories for one
cycle of seasons, then returned to the island.
The gathering was led by Icestar and Sharkstar alone, for
ThunderClan and Wind Clan had no leaders.
The Clans regarded each others strangers, for
each cat had changed greatly over the seasons.
RiverClan now resembled OceanClan, with
dark pelts, and light bellies and legs.
ThunderClan's pelts had become dark and
dappled to blend in with the forest.
Wind Clan changed with the land around them—tawny
in new-leaf and green-leaf, dark ginger in leaf-fall,
and snow-white in leaf-bare.
And ShadowClan's pelts grew dark as night, with points
of crimson, as if they had been washed with a river of
blood, and wrapped in a cloak of shadows.
The Clans were re-named for where they lived, and
the color of their WindClan, taking pride
that they changed with the land, named themselves EarthClan
ThunderClan was named RainClan, for the forest
of rain in which they resided.
The cats of RiverClan took the already-existing
name of the Clan that they were now part of.
And the cats of ShadowClan became NightClan,
for the color of their pelts, and for the endless darkn
ess that they were plunged into each leaf-bare.
Ah, young one. You notice that I have failed
to mention the most important of the Clans.
No, my dear kit. StarClan still roams Silverpelt,
and kept their original name. You ask how they walk in
the dreams of warriors without the Moonpool.
As you know from the tales told by Elders, the
Clans once lived in a great forest, and they
spoke to StarClan by dreaming beside the Moonstone.
Now, at the Gathering, each cat spoke of this.
How would the Medicine Cats speak to StarClan,
or leaders be granted their nine lives?
Where was the new MoonPlace?
This was answered when a young apprentice—barely
out of the Nursery—discovered a tunnel below the great
sea-rock that the leaders stood upon.
Being Icestar's only kit, he was soon consumed by the
curiosity that often gnawed at his mother, and dove
right into the tunnel. Icestar was very protective
of her son, as many queens are, and followed him
into the tunnel. As she arrived, he was consumed by
silver-white flames, and light exploded in the cavern.
The young cat's black coat turned as white as the stone
walls around him, and his crimson points as silver as the moon.
His sapphire-blue eyes, though still young and lively,
held great knowledge and wisdom. He said that he
would forever be known as Lightstar, and that
StarClan had chosen him to live by the Moonflame.
The Gathering ended that night, and the Clans returned
to their territories. Lightstar remained alone, except
when white kits with silver points were born. These
kits were both gifted and cursed. They would never be
warriors, but because of their great wisdom, they would
either die in the Moonflame, or be forever bound to
Lightstar's fate. Each of these kits was taken to Lightstar,
and each was tested by the Moonflame. Each died
before they eyes of Lightstar and the heartbroken
queen who had birthed it. Lightstar, who
had been given the ability to walk in the dreams
of the warriors, appeared in the dreams of each
of the leaders. He said that two cats—a tom and a
she-kit—would be born alone in the leaf-bare.
Comet and Moon.
He didn't know which Clan they would be born to, but
he did know that the queen, the ordinary kits, and
possibly one of the gifted, would die.
Hush, my dear kit, and look at your pelt.
Is it not like any other in your Clan?
Were you not born inside the safety of the Nursery?
Do your mother and siblings lie beside you?
Then you will remain here, and become
a warrior or Medicine Cat.
Sleep now, little one. You have dreams to make.
Destinies to be discovered.
Now hush, dear one, and sleep...
[centerFor generations, the story has been passed from Elder to kit. No one ever thought that Lightstar's words would come true. Some doubted his existence altogether But as leaf-bare arrived, Queens near kitting have been disappearing from the Nurseries. Lightstar fades, and with him fades the Moonflame. Now only a small silver flame lights the cavern, and Lightstar's pelt darkens each day, though his points remain silver. His ominous prophecy has been remembered by all, and mates begin to drift away from each other. No one knows what will happen, but one thing is true.
If Comet and Moon are not born soon, the Clans will cease to exist.[/center]
